Casual jobs 'without a name'

"Truth will spring from the earth; justice will look down from heaven" (Ps 85,11)

Yes, this passage of the Gospels is familiar, but the Spirit is ever inventive opening my eyes and continually revealing to me new treasures.

I am still busy with the same type of work, doing cleaning jobs in the area. Manual work is part of the life of the majority of humanity. It is often work that does not have a special name: "Could you do this or could you do that?"

In the midst of this daily round there are words that at different times take on a particular significance... For me at the moment it is the word "wait for" that has become so meaningful. . "wait for the boss...the salary...the day off..., but also for the bus to move! From Alchan (Mandaluyong) to Makati and vice versa it is not very far, but it can take up to 2 hours during rush hour when many workers go to work or go home. Sitting on the bus for a long time is a daily experience among workers. They do not worry or complain. I observe people around me, some smiling holding their cell phone, others eating because it will be too late when they get home, others sleeping because they got up early in the morning and someone else holding a rosary... Most of them seem relaxed after a whole day of hard work. I feel they have accepted the situation, and take this time of waiting lightly, as a gift to relax... Although our life can be so ordinary and monotonous, it is really the place where the Lord gives us his most precious gift: the Word made flesh, who lived among us.

"We know that God never boasts of His power, yet sometimes we would like to see it at work! Often he prefers to bury it in the soil of human life, where truth, love, care, compassion, goodness, can grow and break through when the time is ripe for Resurrection and new life. He nourishes this fragile plant by giving us our "daily bread' that we have learnt to ask for, the Bread of Life, always given that we may receive from Him the same courage to hope and to love."
