As he says himself in the text that follows, Anand has been in India for almost two decades. He has lived at the fraternity of Alampundi for the whole of this time, and during this period he has shared the life of people affected by suffering. But for a long time one particular environment has attracted him in a special way – the caste of the 'Untouchables' who are now referred to as the Dalit community. Joining them and living with them was impossible for a foreigner. It was mainly because of this that Anand asked for Indian citizenship.
