In the preface to the original French edition of this book the author, Father George Gorree, writes: ‘This work is not a new Life of Charles de Foucauld; it is simply a rigorously exact record, made from clear and precise evidence, of events both great and small that made up his career. I have tried to present the history of his vocation, of his projects, of his spiritual development, step by step, by means of many unpublished documents but particularly Foucauld's own letters to his cousin Madame Olivier de Bondy.’
