I suppose, like any member of the fraternities, it had long been my wish to visit the areas where Blessed Charles de Foucauld exercised his priesthood and died. The opportunity came through an old friend, Emmanuel de Marsac, who mentioned in his Christmas card that he was planning a pilgrimage to Algeria. I wrote back immediately, saying I would like to be included.

The initiative for the trip came from two French fraternity members, Noëlle Méténier and Marie-Joseph Blanchard, who in turn got the Paris-based travel agency Routes Bibliques to draw up a tailor-made itinerary. The cost was around £1,250 and the duration just under two weeks.
